It helps enormously at the first meeting and it almost never survives the first tasting unchanged, because what people actually drink varies far more than the reputation suggests. For anyone distributing Italian coffee abroad, the gap between the two is the whole job.

The reputation is real, and partial

“Italian espresso” means something specific: a short extraction, body, a persistent crema, a roast profile built deliberately for that cup and for the machines that produce it.

In markets where filter coffee or milk-based drinks dominate, that profile is not automatically what people prefer. It is a strength that has to be positioned rather than a universal advantage, and a distributor who presents it as self-evidently superior will find the argument harder than expected.

What we found in Poland

We exhibited at Warsaw Food Expo in June 2026 — our first trade fair in the country — largely to find out how far the reputation would carry on its own.

A large coffee culture, and a growing one. More than eighty per cent of adults drink coffee and around sixty per cent drink it daily, but the more interesting figure is the direction: real and increasing interest in specialty coffee, in portioned formats and in the café experience as something worth paying for.

Espresso sits alongside other formats there rather than replacing them. For a distributor that means a range is more useful than a single blend — and that capsules and pods are not a lesser product line but a genuine part of how the market consumes coffee.

What we found in Southeast Asia

At SIGEP Asia in Singapore we met operators from Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, China, Australia and New Zealand — which says something in itself about how that market functions as a crossroads rather than a single destination.

Italian espresso coexists there with milk-based drinks, filter coffee and a serious, technically informed interest in complex aromatic profiles. Our blends were received well at both ends of that range: by buyers who want intensity and body, and by operators in the premium segment who read a cup for its aromatic detail.

What this means if you distribute

Quality alone does not travel. An operator assessing a new coffee is thinking about where it sits in their existing range, who they will sell it to, and what they can say about it to their own customers.

Sensory profile and positioning end up mattering as much as packaging and certifications in defining what is actually a commercial proposition. A blend that is objectively excellent but has no clear place in a buyer’s assortment will lose to one that is merely good and obviously fits.

What travels well, and what has to be explained

Some things carry across borders without help. The association between Italy and espresso is one; the visual language of an Italian roastery is another. Buyers grant these before you say anything.

Other things need translating. Roast intensity, which is normal in one market and extreme in another. Portion size, where a thirty-millilitre serve can read as a mistake. Even the word “blend”, which in a specialty-oriented market can imply a lower grade rather than a deliberate composition. These are not obstacles — they are simply the part of the conversation that has to happen explicitly rather than being assumed.

Which is why we ask about your market first

It would be easier to send a catalogue. But the useful conversation starts from how coffee is consumed where you sell, which formats move, what your competitors already offer and what gap you are trying to fill.

From there we can say which of our lines make sense — and, occasionally, that none of them do. That is a better outcome than a first order that sits in a warehouse.

Italian coffee arrives in most markets with a reputation already attached.
